REST IN PEACE PHIL CARDER

It was a great sadness to all his many friends in the Trust and at the club in general when we heard that our Treasurer, Phil Carder had died on Saturday.

Phil had supported Southport since the early 1960s and had been Treasurer of Trust In Yellow since its formation in 2006. A retired accountant Phil was the perfect Treasurer in that he was completely reliable and calm with the expertise that guaranteed that the Trusts financial affairs were being run properly whether it was cashing the takings at the Race Night or dealing with the Financial Standards Authority. But more than the usual Treasurers role Phil did so much more for the Trust especially the demanding and sometimes thankless job of organising the coaches to away matches which he did with Alan Scarisbrick.

When Phil was diagnosed with leukaemia last Spring he calmly informed the members of Trust board that since he had probably less than two years to live we needed to be planning for the future to cover his work as Treasurer. In the months that followed, despite deteriorating health, he continued to carry out his role brilliantly including the fantastic organisation of the coaches to Derby. Not only did he book all the coaches but spent many hours at the club with Alan taking bookings. It was particularly unfortunate that his condition worsened and at the last minute he was unable to go to watch the match. On what was otherwise a brilliant day the fact that Phil was not there to enjoy it with us was very sad.

Phil was that most loyal of Southport supporters who has stuck by the club through the ups and downs of both league and non-league. His friends who he stood with on the popular side near the half way line are going to miss him greatly at home matches as are all of us who enjoyed his company at various grounds round the country.

Away from football Phil had many other interests including cricket. He played in the Southport and District League for many years and in fact was the Treasurer of the League. The picture was taken a couple of years ago when he was in Perth watching a Test Match between Australia and England.

In everything he did for the Trust, Phil showed a characteristic expertise and authority combined with modesty and good humour. As a Trust we are going to miss him immensely but everyone who knew him is going to feel his loss as a friend even more. Phil was one of those people about whom no-one who knew him ever had a bad word to say. We send our great sympathy to his family for their loss.

Trust In Yellow and everyone who knew him are going to be very much the worse for the passing of Phil Carder.

SPECIAL OFFER TRAVEL TO ALFRETON

Did you travel on the Trust in Yellow coaches to the FA Cup third round tie at Derby?

If so, the Trust is giving you the chance to travel to the important Vanarama Conference match at Alfreton Town on Saturday 7 February for a special offer price of £12.

The Trust was really pleased with the number of fans who used the coaches to Derby and as a thank you to everyone who travelled, the coach fare for the Alfreton match has been reduced.

The special offer of £12 is open to all fans who went on a Trust coach to Derby - both members and non-members.

The offer also applies to members who didn't travel to Derby.

To benefit from the offer, you must pay in advance, so call in to the Trust office at the home matches against Braintree Town or Gateshead.

Interest is expected to be high so book now by calling Alan Scarisbrick on 07980911693.

If you've still got your coach ticket from the Derby match, please bring it along when you pay as it will be easier for the Trust to check your name against their records.

If you haven't got your ticket any more, the Trust should still have your details.

The match at Alfreton has the makings of an important fixture with both sides battling for points in their bid to avoid relegation, so a strong travelling support will be important.

The coach departs the Merseyrail Community Stadium at 11am on Saturday 7 February, also picking up in Ainsdale and Birkdale.

MINUTES OF MEMBERS' MEETING - TUESDAY 13TH JANUARY

1. Apologies for absence

Katrina, Phil

2. Minutes of last meeting and matters arising

All were covered elsewhere on the agenda.

3. Treasurers report

The Trusts balance currently stands at £27,435. Of this £15,000 has been transferred to a 30 day notice savings account with Cambridge & Counties bank. The Derby trip generated a profit of £2,487 which means that coach trips to date have generated a surplus of £2,413. Membership renewals and new memberships have raised a total of £1,705 since the beginning of July.

4. Membership

Bill reported that Trust membership is now up to 226. A few new members have been gained from the Derby trip and it is hoped more will follow with £5 membership being available to non-members who travelled on the coaches until 14th February.

5. Coach Travel

The trip to Derby was a success and a lot of goodwill was generated towards the Trust from those that travelled. There was only one minor complaint received which will be investigated. The Trust would like to thank all of those who volunteered to be responsible for looking after a coach to ensure that the day went as smoothly as possible. Thanks in particular go to Alan Scarisbrick and Phil Carder for their tireless efforts in organising travel for over 700 people at such short notice. Some of the monies raised from the day will go towards subsidising a future trip with Alfreton looking the most likely. An anonymous donor has also generously put £100 towards the cost of coach hire for this match. The uptake for the Bristol weekend has been good so far with bookings already being into double figures.

6. Cooperation with the club

The Trust will yet again push for a meeting with the club after yet another period of frustrating delays. Until answers from the club are forthcoming the statement issued in December regarding progression with the floodlights can’t be updated although this will happen when concrete answers are received from the club.

7. Fundraising and other Trust events

The Race Night will go ahead on Saturday 21st March with sponsors for races and owners for jockeys and horses now being sought. The evening will be hosted by Tony Adams and the Trust will liaise with Gary Brabin to secure the attendance of the players. A meet the manager session will hopefully take place on Saturday 14th February. The response to the 04/05 players reunion has been very positive and it is hoped to hold a fans v players match followed by a quiz in the Grandstand Bar. As done previously the places in the fans team will be sold off for a pre-determined amount. A presentation evening will be arranged to take place after the last home game of the season where, along with the usual player awards, the Fan Of The Season award will also be presented. The Luke George Save It or Shave It has now been running for 2 months and has raised £410 for Diabetes UK to date. David Raya Martin has been awarded honorary Trust membership and this will be presented to him at the next convenient date.

8. How to build on the Cup success

The most important way to build on the Cup success will be the installation of new floodlights giving both regular and prospective supporters a visual indicator of what the Trust does. It was agreed that the Trust will issue a timeframe for all future major projects to be completed within to avoid the long delays experienced with the floodlights project.

9. Any other business

Richard Hinds was the winner of the quiz issued on the coaches to Derby and wins a years Trust membership. The second Onion Bag Chronicles are expected in the club shop in time for the Chester game with all profits going to the Trust.

10. Dates of next meeting

Wednesday 25th February - Board
