Jesse Norman MP secures Parliamentary debate on the floor of the House of Commons on non-league football

Jesse Norman, MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, has secured a debate on the floor of the House of Commons on the 4th September focusing entirely on the Future of Non-League Football [link:]

Jesse has himself seen what happens when football clubs arent owned and run properly, and when leagues and governing bodies cant or wont intervene, having witnessed the slow and painful decline of his local club, Hereford United.

Jesse is hoping the debate will cover:

The Football Association and the Owners and Directors Test; how inadequate it is particularly at non-league level, where the policing of clubs is so difficult.; The role of coops and supporters trusts • The role of HMRC ;The Football Creditors; Rule; Financial viability of football clubs, particularly those that have recently been relegated; Transparency of club ownership; The work of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee on football governance - and the Governments response

The Club has been subject to relegations, ground closures, and a boycott in place for several weeks from the near 1000 strong Hereford United Supporters Trust and its membership under its now former owner, Tommy Agombar, who finally failed the FAs Owners and Directors Test [link:]

The debate is important because it focuses on an area of non-league football where Supporters Direct has made significant strides since it was formed in 2000, but which often suffers through lack of attention in the mainstream media.

Perhaps you could even pop in and speak to your local MP at one of their regular surgeries, usually held on Fridays in the constituency.

Before kick-off at Saturday’s opening match against Forest Green Rovers, a presentation was made by Trust in Yellow to supporter John Dennis as the winner of this summer’s World Cup Sweepstake.

Having been paired with Germany in a draw made by Southport manager Martin Foyle ahead of the tournament, John claimed the £100 cash prize after his country emerged victorious in Brazil.

Thanks to John and the other 31 fans who entered the sweepstake during the summer.

John was presented with his prize by Trust membership secretary Bill Sloan ahead of the weekend’s match.

John has kindly donated his winnings to the Liverpool Women’s Charity. More details on the charity can be found here.
